POP CULTURE AND INDIVIDUALITY
A one day symposium as part of Dissolving Borders: Performance, Pedagogy, Practice, Research in association with Northumbria University, Dundee College & Dance City
The symposium will bring together artists, academics, practitioners and students for sharing of performances, discussions and presentations on the topics of pop culture and individuality.

12.30pm – delegate arrival
1.00–2.30 – Workshop – Ethelinda Lashley-Johnstone will lead a practical session based on preparation for performance – looking at the physical needs of the performing body and focusing on core strength for the professional dancer.
2.45-3.00 – opening address & welcome by Steinvor Palsson
3.00-4.15 performance presentations; Laura Forbes, Chris Kidd, Katie Duncan, Nicole Wood, Stephanie Cook, Rene Pieters, Yr 3 Northumbria University choreography students
4.15-4.30 Break
4.30-5.30 Panel discussion – chaired by Steinvor Palsson which will encourage debate & attempt to answer some of the questions set in the original proposal document
How does pop culture impact on the creativity of dance makers and performers?
Does the shift towards popular dance culture truly nurture performance qualities in the young dancer?
How does popular culture impact upon the development of distinct and individual movement vocabularies?
What are potentials of 2D media (such as the internet) to enhance and develop our ideas about performance presence?
Is technology and internet culture enhancing the development of individual and idiosyncratic movement vocabularies?
How can training and professional mentoring develop appropriately the performance skills of the youth of the 21st century?
